U.S. Severe Weather Update (Jan. 16-29)

Severe Weather Update - January 16-22:

Northwest Snowstorm

  • The vigorous winter Pacific jet stream will bring several wet, windy storms into the West Coast beginning midweek. Each of these storms should bring soaking rain and heavy mountain snow to the Northwest, heavy snow to the northern Rockies.
  • Parts of the Northwestern U.S. are under winter storm watches, warnings, or winter weather advisories due to the expected or ongoing snows. Seattle could see up to a foot of snow by the end of the week. Gusty winds are also expected in parts of the Northwestern U.S. from these systems: combined with cold temperatures, this will lead to dangerously cold wind chills in parts of Montana.

Severe storms possible in South

  • Some severe thunderstorms are expected today and tonight for eastern parts of Oklahoma and Texas, eastward through the Lower Mississippi Valley, into the Tennessee Valley and the Southern Appalachians. This includes portions of Arkansas, extreme eastern Oklahoma, and parts of northern Louisiana.

Severe Weather Update - January 23-29:

From Texas into Tennessee  - possible severe thunderstorm outbreak

  • Through Pattern Recognition, meteorologists have outlined an area of potential severe thunderstorms for next week. The area they are focused on is Louisiana-Mississippi, Arkansas to Tennessee, Kentucky and possibly Alabama. Portions of extreme eastern Texas may also get in the picture as well.  The current storm pattern resembles the January 17-22, 1999 tornado outbreak where 150 tornadoes occurred and 17 people were killed.
  • Although it's still a long way from the event, it looks fairly impressive to say the least. As it gets closer, there will be an update sent out. Their confidence is moderate at this time.
